Enjoy a friendly competition based on the total number of species seen during the month of January 2023 within Connecticut.
After one week , coordinator Steve Mayo posted the following on the CTBirds listserv.
It’s just a week into 2023 and according to eBird, you’ve already tallied 155 species of birds in Connecticut! Some of the highlights include Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, Tundra Swan, Eurasian Wigeon, Harlequin Duck, Barrow’s Goldeneye, American Oystercatcher, Black-bellied Plover, Razorbill, Iceland Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Glaucous Gull, American Bittern, Black-crowned Night Heron, Townsend’s Solitaire, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskin, Chipping Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, Rusty Blackbird, Tennessee Warbler, Orange-crowned
Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Northern Parula Warbler, Pine Warbler and Dickcissel. Most of these birds are still around, and many are being seen in more than one location in our State.To participate, simply continue to get out and keep track of your sightings. As for the rarities, there are many more species to be found. Some possibilities include Ross’s Goose, Pink-footed Goose, King Eider, Long-billed Dowitcher, Dovekie, Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, Black Guillemot, Common Gull, Pacific Loon, Golden Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy Owl, Evening Grosbeak, Common Redpoll, White-winged Crossbill and Western Tanager.
